Stunning Milford Sound's alpine highway closed to avalanches

Spring in Milford Sound is never easy, the thawing snow making ideal conditions for avalanches along the one alpine road in to this idyllic location. In September a recent storm triggered 20 such occurances, and a major landslide. Luckily the helicopter operators at helitours have no problems traversing the short ride from Queenstown to Milford Sound, providing a safe and beautiful alternative to those trapped on the coast.
