Until now it was the role of the T.S.S. Earnslaw, or Helicopter operators like heli tours to ferry passengers and goods across the lake to Walter Peak and Mt Nicholas stations. However there is a new option on the horizon with the introduction of the 'Spirit of Queenstown'. This 51 Tonne, 150 passenger ferry is set to open up the Mt Nicholas area to more  tourists and sight seers in the near future. However transporting the ferry over road from Bluff to Kingston, at the south of Lake Wakatipu was no easy feat. Without the ferry tours to the station, and its picturesque mountain backdrop would take several hours by road, or a 15 minute helicopter ride.
